...their way, Food Stamps will vanish and you'll be back to eating surplus government cheese and beans the way we did when I was a kid. My grandma made do. But she was no chef.

I ate a lot of it growing up...and it wasn't bad.

In fact...it made the best mac and cheese.

try making mac and cheese with diet pepsi.  You'll be disappointed.

in a marinade, however.  Cheese can't do that.

And I agree, gov't cheese isn't bad - my great grandmother used to get blocks of it in her 80s.

...a lot of it myself (although it had dwindled to nothing by the last week of the month), let me just say that it sucked.

believe me, I understand what you mean.  We didn't visit "Big Mama" that often, so it was something interesting and novel - but if I ever see an MRE again I will likely puke.

great-grandmother "Big Mama," just like we did! She was really something. Lived on a peach farm in GA, made the best peach cobbler anybody ever ate (you could smell her house blocks away, and that would always bring the neighbors by for a chat), was a size large lady, in a wheel chair for her last years. Made a wish before blowing out the one candle on her 100th birthday...

"Lord, I thank you for a hundred fine years. But if it's all the same to you, I'd just as soon go." Blew out that candle, had some cake, died peacefully in her sleep that night.
