The very idea of constituency is quaint and outmoded. Now politicians have patrons and sponsors, and these are the people for whom they work. Attaining voter support is merely an annoyance that has to be overcome every 2 or 4 years or so so that the real work of running the country can be done by the people in a position to do it.

brief moment in which we are the governing constituent, an "elector," that we can choose to exercise wisely, not bother with or throw away in a passion filled, but not smart, gesture. In between our voices are muted, though still there.

All the money, all the "sponsorship" all the sound bites and leaflets and balloon filled rallies of election season would count as nothing against informed electors who have been paying attention to performance. Doing our job of using that moment may not be as satisfying as a rally or demonstration and it may do little in a short run of years—but all else is pretty much sound and fury signifying at least little.

We've got another moment in 2014 and maybe earlier in some state and local elections. Don't wast the moment.

The only foes that threaten America are the enemies at home, and those are ignorance, superstition, and incompetence. [Elbert Hubbard]

"patrons and sponsors" is spot on.

The movie "Charlie Wilson's War" does an excellent job of addressing this. Wilson, a champion of Israel, is asked, "just how many Jewish voters are there in your district?" and his answer is "five". He goes on to explain that it doesn't matter, because there's New York-based pro-Israel lobbies that reliably provide him with the campaign funds to get reliably elected every two years.
