I like Lawrence and respect his opinion, but I think he ignores the political reality.

If there's a separate vote on an amendment for an assault weapons ban, the Repugs will surely vote it down, but then some will vote to support the much weaker bill.  They can then go home and tell the gun nuts they voted against the freedom hating Dems, and tell the uninformed independents that they supported tough gun control measures, a win win situation.

If gutless Reid had left the assault weapon ban in the main bill, the Repugs would have been forced to vote against the hugely popular background checks.  90% of the people support the checks.  This would have given Dems a huge campaign issue and may have permanently weakened the NRA.

This was another very bad judgement call by Harry Reid!

be about. I think he is looking only from a now pov. As in he is thinking that it realistically can pass and thinking the gamesmanship is the right way.

      Not caring as much.

And hypothetically I'd imagine resistance in either form will have the same effect.

A lot of people I know are turning to a lot of conservatives I know and asking them to Justify why they are buying all the 9mm ammo from Wal-mart etc.

Either way I think they already chose a label. Now it's looking at from the standpoint of the Senate as a functional body. Is that a mistake? Probably.

If so, then yes all consideration should be given to electoral advantages.

how much power NRA has. Even background checks will probably fail no matter how popular they are. Although they do have a chance at least in the Senate. Coupled with AWB they would have no chance at all.
