merely because  they "committed a federal crime" (or a state one)? Maybe deny them the right of self-incrimination, and to be free from cruel and unusual treatment in the future - since they've already committed one crime, let's torture them until we find out which others they've committed!. Spot warrantless fishing-expedition inspections of their homes and persons, not just while they're on parole, but for the rest of their lives? Let's take it a step further: No voting rights - for how can a criminal be trusted to vote for the right person? How about denying them abortion rights? Since their morals are clearly deficient, perhaps they should be compelled to attend a particular church and worship a particular god? Life-long gag orders on political speech from them? Let's quarter troops in their houses!

A rational person would point out that the last several of these are not relevant to most crimes, and that all of them are draconian responses inconsistent with a free and just state. But a self-consistent rational person would then have to admit that this then implies that the question of relevance of continuing to the right to bear arms to people who have served their time, or in other parlance, paid their debt to society, for purely non-violent crimes is at least a question worthy of discussion.

I reject your "argument" as just silly games .

If this diary had just included a pay-pal address to assist the beneficiaries of this ruling in feeding their pets, the comment threads would be completely different and the judge would be being hailed as William Brennan reincarnated ...
