    I was able to create an account fine without providing a phone # or other email. (Even though both fields were given. Does it completely not work if you leave it blank?)

    Really, declaring martial law would require more than taking over Google. Many people may use gmail, yes, but that doesn't mean that there aren't other options.

    That said, I still think Google should be required to not demand that information if they are indeed doing so, given how prominent and "required" they are these days.

    Personally, I just use my own mail server...yet I still have to maintain a Google account for things like shared spreadsheets, etc, that people inevitably share.
