  •  I just don't get (5+ / 0-)

why we can't require universal licensing and registration, the way we do with cars.

We don't let just anyone operate a motor vehicle -- I'd never be able to get a driver's license because of various physical and psychological issues. And not everyone with a driver's license can drive every sort of vehicle -- if you don't have the proper license you can't drive a big rig or a public transit bus.

Why can't we treat guns the same way? You want to own a gun, fine -- prove you know how to operate and care for it. Carry enough liability insurance so that if someone is hurt while you're operating it, you can cover their medical bills. You want something more powerful, or more than one? You get a higher class of license. Buyers would have to show proof of license and insurance before purchase.

Sure, it's not going to stop all the idiocy, just like you still have people driving without a license or with a suspended license. But it might cut back on a lot of it.

There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- goddammit, you've got to be kind. -- Kurt Vonnegut
