  •  i hate these interpretations w/no ref to radio (37+ / 0-)

1000 coordinated radio stations have been short circuiting our democratic feedback mechanisms for 25 years because people like maher, who's show is great, have no clue how much of what he gets riled about starts on RW radio and could only get legs because of 1000 coordinated radio stations repeating the same scripted content to 50 mil a week.

the shrill people making it into the MSM are only there because the shrill people on radio have made them acceptable and news worthy through national scale volume and repetition. that is why they get 50% of the seats at the table.

and it only happens because the left ignores it and allows the shrill screaming on the radio level and reacts after the stupid has already been pounded into the earholes of 50 mil a week.

    •  They e-mail this stuff to each other. 'Forward (12+ / 0-)

All' exists with the same ferocity as the 'up-line system' of multi level marketing at Amway. RW radio is a mover but 'Forward All' is the back bone.

      •  They spread their crapola on multiple (13+ / 0-)

platforms:  radio, Foxaganda, and the dreaded Forward All as you correctly point out.   And the forwarded shit that hits my mailbox is enough to make my stomach turn.   Worse, though, is that it's forwarded by reasonable people who are horrified enough to forward the concocted outrage of the day at the speed of light, but not engaged enough to even check Snopes (no, I don't expect them to go much deeper than that) to make sure that they're forwarding actual outrage.

The real horror doesn't start, though, until crap that starts on Breitbart or some other news inventing site gets covered by the TM and then the RW paid shills step right in.  I know their names, faces, and the BS they mouth over and over again as they move from talk show to talk show as though they had some legitimate point of view.  They don't.  They got their talking points and memes emailed to them.

The RW will never, ever have any grassroots;  their agenda is just too inhumane and toxic.  What they have is more than enough money to put up multiple shell operations so they can have the pretense of representing actual real people.

    •  All of which only became possible when the F.C.C. (12+ / 0-)

      threw out the Fairness Doctrine.

Which required any single program broadcast on the public television or radio airwaves to make time for dissenting points of view.

Meaning Fox News, while airing The O'Reilly show, would have had to give (for example only) #FreeAirtime to The Randy Rhodes show or The Young Turks.

The result being that consumers (voters by another name) would be exposed to a variety of ideologies and not just a singular point of view for years on end.

Unlike today, and ever since the Reagan era, which oversaw the beginning of the dismantling of the New Deal by conservative bullshit and lies broadcast out to tens of millions of willfully ignorant Americans, in their cars and kitchens. Endlessly.

traction, but anymore I don't think it's main vehicle for spreading RW propaganda. Once enough RW radio hosts focus on a particular piece of misinformation it then starts to get promoted through other channels that reach a wider audience than traditional RW talk radio.  Sometimes it seems like Newsmax and other RW propaganda sites have links on half the sites I visit.  In the past couple of days a spate of anti-Obamacare advertisements has been popping up on YouTube.  These ads are probably reaching millions of people outside of the traditional RW radio audience.  Lots of people aren't very detailed oriented so their take away from reading the ads is a vague notion that Obamacare might have all these huge problems that liberals aren't talking about.   That all the claims in the ads have been debunked doesn't matter, because most of the people seeing the ads haven't read the articles debunking the anti-Obmacare ads.  Because conservatives seem to have no inhibitions against creating and publicizing false claims it constantly puts progressives in the position of reacting to conservative tall tales.  By the time progressives start to counter the conservative misinformation the idea has been spread across a variety of media that's much broader than just talk radio.  Lot's of non-ideological people are thus primed to give RW ideas more consideration than they are due.  As the saying goes, a lie will travel half way around the world before the truth gets its boots on.

        ium though.

IMO RW radio works so well because it is unchallenged on it's own turf- in it's own medium- in most areas of the country. that lack of challenge allows them to launch their lies and distortions with total certitude/without doubt, and that's what sells them.

with internet or TV or print, even with as much consolidation as there is, its still easy to find alternative political viewpoints. but if you want free politics while driving or working there are no alternatives in most parts of the country.

kickstarting the lies and distortions with that kind of unchallenged certitude is gold for the propagandists.

whatever the effect of the internet obamacare ads, talk radio has chewed that to death for years now, including supplying the teabaggers with most of their lies and myths.

there are many things the left could do to reduce that talk radio capability but waiting for internet to overcome it is not  good strategy- 2014 is right around the corner and global warming is here.

and even then that tool will be effective for them in minimizing all progressive efforts, swiftboating, etc. - the left has to take it seriously and destroy the monopoly or it won't get any major reforms anytime soon.

hate radio is heard loud and clear blaring from residential construction sites in my neighborhood.   I live in NY.

20 or so years ago hate radio tickled the unhappy far right fools looking for something to hang onto.  Maybe they felt disenfranchised or just down on their luck and they needed to blame somebody.  Clinton arrived just in time and dittoheads were born.

Fast forward and we now have a generation of people who view this type of thinking and politics as religion.  This is a profitable turn of events for a lot of people and so the machine continues to thrive.

I used to think if you were smart enough you could see through it, but I know many intelligent and caring people who can't see past it.

it's basically a bunch of cowardly protected bullies and carnival barkers yelling from every corner and stump in the country.

all the left has to do is stop giving them a free speech free ride. thinking americans have been walking by, listening to music or turning it off, as if they're not there.

the rush boycott is helping but is specifically targeted. dems have a lot to gain in 2014, and in all their efforts at reform, if they got active re talk radio.

        but it's not happening.

It's not so easy to find on the dial, but it's easy on the internet.

Stephanie Miller and the mooks, Thom Hartmann, Norman Goldman, Ed Schultz, the unique Randi Rhodes. Seek, find, listen ... and support their advertisers, btw (particularly those who bypass RW hatie radio.)

and that won't happen unless the left challenges the monopoly. it needs to happen soon.

the 95 -5 ratio is not a reflection of the 'market' for talk radio and dems and all progressives would have a lot to gain by pressuring their state universities to stop endorsing RW radio.

even the declaration that a uni would look for alternatives and not renew would force a station to dump RW talk or offer balance.

all pressure, protest, monitoring, etc re those stations will hurt the monopoly and help progressive radio- it won't come by legislation with 1000 coordinated radio stations screaming "free speech threatened!!"

lefty radio is easy to find on the internet, and either to tune in on the computer in real time or to purchase podcasts (cheap) is also easy over the i-net. Colmes, e.g. just got booted from satellite radio, and could use some subscribers. Norman Goldman similarly has had to take a turn toward profitability, as has Mike Malloy (for truthseekers!)

You make an excellent point about the 95/5 and RW hate radio squawking about "Freedom of Speech", since by definition, it is the 5% not getting their (our) fair share of fos.

Best way to challenge for air time is to contact the RW radio station advertisers and tell them you won't do business with them until they support LW radio equally.

Biggest a$$hole RW radio sponsors in my market are the FORD dealerships. I'm up for a new car in the next couple years, and it won't be a FORD.

burns up though. we can't wait a generation, we can't even wait till 2014.

in most parts of the country there are no free alts for political talk when driving or working. until it's as easy as turning on the AM radio it's going to be politically dominating in many low pop states with too many senators.

the debt ceiling 'crisis' and benghazi are just two recent talk radio successes for the RW that wouldn't have happened without their talk radio advantage.

in any emergency or major news event (which they can often create) it is those 1000 coordinated radio stations that will often dominate the MSM's interpretation or at least waste democracy's time with distortions and distractions only it can push large scale.

the advantage they've had for the last 25 years requires action from the democratic party and the major progressive orgs now- but there is none.
