Cannabis (ˈkænəbɪs; Cán-na-bis) is a genus of flowering plants that includes three putative varieties, Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis (this type flowers by age of plant and not hours of sunlight like the other two varieties).
Modern horticultural methods of cross-breeding varieties of Cannabis have resulted in many hybrids, and some varieties of Cannabis have been bred specifically to produce low cannabidiol levels (which produce psychoactive results) and high CBD (negligible psychocactive results) levels, to be used primarily for their fiber content for everything except drug use.

The only thing which differentiates the hemp from the medicinal cannabis is the level of cannabinoids (of which there 80-some in Cannabis plants) present in the particular plant. Male or female makes no difference. Most hemp plants come from the Sativa variety, because it tends to grow up to six feet tall, much taller than the Indica or Ruderalis varieties, hence giving longer fibers with which to work; and has been historically bred to (excuse the pun) weed out the THC and leave it non-psychoactive.

So we're both right, in certain ways.
