    on trillions in cash with not enough safe or profitable ways to invest it. They have enjoyed an enormous advantage, grabbing almost all the fruits of productivity gains and not sharing them with the workers.

    The least they can do is something that benefits society.

      They are sitting on cash rather than invest it in productive ways. Frankly, this is something many companies can and should be doing, which in turn would create further economies of scale for clean energy.

      They haven't spent it because they put it into an overseas account and are now praying for the tooth fairy/Easter bunny/Santa Claus to eliminate their tax liability on that money, which would be a total windfall for the shareholders.  They knew the deal was they'd pay taxes on the money when repatriated and now they're trying to rewrite the rules of the game - exclusively for their benefit.  It's one of the reasons that super-majorities should be required for tax decrease votes in addition to any tax increases.
