  •  His farewell to Danny Inouye... (16+ / 0-)

..was a lesson for all of us.

Terribly weakened by illness and infirmity, Dole was wheeled into the Capitol Rotunda. With his wife and an aide assisting him, he rose from his wheelchair and struggled to walk up to his dear friend's casket. There were tears in his eyes as he saluted with his left hand, then gently stroked the flag-draped casket.

"I wouldn't want Danny to see me in a wheelchair," he said.

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven. I would hope that includes forgiveness.

It's true that politics ain't beanbag, and Bob Dole played it rough at times. But he sacrificed for his country as a young man, suffered terribly during a long rehabilitation, and always put his country ahead of his party.

I would take Bob Dole in a heartbeat over just about any current Republican member of Congress.

    •  To his credit, he never engaged in arms for (10+ / 0-)

hostages.  He never sabotaged peace talks.  He never lied the nation into war. In short, he didn't engage in the crimes of Nixon, Reagan, Bush I and Bush II.

Yes, he'd be better than any other Republican in Congress today. He understands loyalty to friends, love of country, and treating people decently.

Politics is hardball, but person-to-person, Dole is a decent human being.  That cannot be said for Santorum, Gingrich, Romney, Huckleby and the rest.

Dan Inouye was my senator for, well, my whole life. He helped me personally at one of the most critical junctures of my life. He was a true war hero, and a great public servant who loved Hawaii and her people. The beautiful friendship shared by these two men--these two patriots--from different political parties should be a model to us all.

Ho'oponopono. To make things right; restore harmony; heal.
