  •  When I last checked the groups near me (3+ / 0-)

they required people taking items from others to give away items as well.  IE. you couldn't just be a taker only.  While I often have items to give away, I can't guarantee that I would at the time I might be "taking", or for a similar value.
As for Goodwill, I stopped donating cash to them when they stopped taking non-working appliances.  I'm old enough to remember when they bragged in their ads they wanted broken appliances and other items so they could "train" disabled people to put those items back into working condition.  Guess items are cheaper to replace these days than to refurbish, or else Goodwill gave up on its mission to train disabled for decent jobs.

    •  That's a shame (0+ / 0-)

about requiring people to give as well as take. It doesn't seem to be in line with the overall goal of freecycle, i.e., preventing things from going into landfills.

      •  Some groups have an initial OFFER (1+ / 0-)

requirement before you can post any WANTS. You can still usually receive items that others have offered, even if you haven't posted an OFFER.

        •  It's still limiting (0+ / 0-)

and I can't really see the rationale if the idea is to help keep things out of landfills.

Still, I'm appreciative that moderators are willing to do the job, and I don't argue with my local moderators' rules.

          •  It's done to encourage... (1+ / 0-)

...members to offer something, even if it's a small and seemingly useless item to them. Some mods see it as a way to get members to jump in and become involved.  It also discourages what they call the "galloping gimmees".

Not all groups have this requirement and actually, I think the main FC is cracking down on it because it endangers their non-profit status.

            •  You're a lot more knowledgeable (0+ / 0-)

about Freecycle than I am. And I'll admit, I haven't been that involved with using it that much in the past few years.

Why don't you write another diary about Freecycle from a moderator's point of view. I think only a handful of the people on Daily Kos will even see the one I've posted here; if you write another, it will help get the word out to more people who don't even know about Freecycle.
