    I used to argue with ornithologists that it was kind of silly to have official common names.  One of the main reasons for having scientific names is the variation in common names from place to place.  Seems like duplication of effort.

    When I was younger I would argue with my cousins because they used local names for reptiles instead of the proper names in the field guides.  So I was nothing if not inconsistent.  Now I generally try and keep my mouth shut unless I am confused or I think it will confuse someone else.
