    The Depression era was certainly bleak enough on its own, as I've heard at every familly reunion for decades from the older aunts and uncles who lived through it.  But life expectancy was 60 or better, not 50.  (And those advertised $15 suits and coats on sale - that's $250 today; well out of reach of most but the lucky 1% in those years.)
