I am am odd duck in that I have been since 1997 a serious Social Security Finance hobbyist. Not the weirdest hobby. But not one that you find just anywhere. More often than Blindfold Scrimshaw but less often by leagues than Napoleanic War Reenactors.

Obama seen from the eyes of this New Dealer never was a 2nd FDR and certainly not a New Dealer. People in 2007 and 2008 just saw what they wanted to see on this front, the Obama campaigns economic hires telegraphing exactly where he was likely to go. Which is where he HAS gone.

His version of universal health care was never Single Payer. He wouldn't have made David Cutler his initial health care economist hire if it was. He never was a down the line defender of traditional Social Security. Or he wouldn't have made Jeffrey Liebman his initial retirement policy economics hire. And he sure as hell wasn't going to be FDR reincarnated or he wouldn't have hired Austen Goolsbee out of the University of Chicago to be Head Economic Ringwraith of Obama 2008 back in 2007.

Candidate Obama was infinitely better than Candidate McCain on everything. And I was ecstatic to vote for him. On the other hand despite some rhetorical flourishes his substantive platform on my top issue as a SS hobbyist was pretty much what it is today. People not as freakish on this topic just hearing what they wanted to hear. Me I saw the name 'Jeffrey Liebman' and went 'Yikes! that ain't good!' and in looking what Campaign Obama actually committed to was confirmed in that.

On SS we got what we voted for. And I voted for Obama anyway. And no the World isn't Pure. - SocSec.Defender at - founder DK Social Security Defenders group - (hmm is there a theme emerging here?)
