Dogs from the street can have all the desirable qualities that one could want from pet dogs. Most adopted stray dogs are usually humble and exceptionally faithful to their owners as if they are grateful for this kindness. -- H.M. Bhumibol Adulyadej

state, no religious involvement.  Many felt religion was the opiate that kept Jews from fighting back.  Unless I have this backwards or the meanings have changed.  Searching on iPhone not good in my Internet challenged neck of the woods.

What I remember is that the original demands for a State of Israel came from those who rejected a religious Israel, just wanted an end to a Diaspora that led inevitably to genocides over the centuries.

It is rather different than the right here in the US.

They even oppose some of the special rights that certain religious groups get.

It isn't just religious conservatives on the Israeli side that are the problem in government, they are a problem in other ways though.

by religion.  Hasidism started with a Rebbe who wanted to break the rigidity of observance he felt kept Jews from the beauty of their teachings.  He worshipped in natural settings.  Hasidim now tend to be the most rigid about observance.  Interesting that religion tends to inhibit spiritual living.

        •  Exactly. Just like us, with Founding Fathers (0+ / 0-)

who wanted clear separation between church and state being misrepresented by our conservative religionistas.

Perhaps we need to focus more on the craziness undermining our country.  I'd like my country back.
