  •  Missouri is not getting more red. (1+ / 0-)

Obama competed aggressively in 2008 but not at all in 2012. I know, I helped in 08. Missouri is by no means deep red. It's a myth. We have KC and STL. The rest is cows with EVs.

    Wikipedia regarding 2008:

"Missouri was won by Republican nominee John McCain by a 0.1% margin of victory."

Before about 2000 or so there was a large conservadem base in Missouri.  This is mostly gone Republican now, but there is a little bit of unfinished business there.  I agree that the main dynamic between 2008 and 2012 was that Obama didn't do as well nationally; this put Missouri out of reach and he arbitraged it, which made Romney's margin a bit larger.

And there's two other dynamics.  On one hand, the Republican machine there is well oiled.  On the other hand, the remaining Democrats are generally a lot less conservative than they used to be (this same dynamic can be observed all over the south; South Carolina Democrats aren't a whole lot to the right of the rest of the country).
