  •  The problem I have with the phrase (0+ / 0-)

"legalized interracial marriage" is the same problem I have with "legalize marijauna." The phrasing implies that natural occurences (people associating in pairs) and natural organisms (plants, animals) have to be incorporated in man's law (regulated by man) in order to exist. Categorizing our environment as either consistent with or contrary to our legal regimen is a bad habit. It demonstrates a man-centric perspective which denigrates reality unless it fits into the comparments men create. Humans have a right to categorize their perceptions; they do not have a right to pass moral judgement (declare good or evil) on what they categorize based on their perceptions, especially when those perceptions rely on superficial optics -- i.e. what things look like -- because appearances are deceiving and, as a result, the judgements are often wrong.
For example, if we were to judge fungi (mushrooms) strictly by their appearance and eat the "pretty" ones, we'd likely end up seriously ill or dead in short order. Shunning the strange looking is not quite as potentially disasterous, unless the shunning leads us to accept a familiar that's actually more harmful, as the record of domestic assaults attests.
"Legal" should not be equated with good, especially not when the rule of law is being used to subordinate and intimidate. Slavery was once legal and owning children still is. Declaring children to be illegitimate is a crime against nature--a testament to man's hubris.

We organize governments to deliver services and prevent abuse.
