ALthough, I can see some room for concern there. The man bears watching.

I wrote a longer post to  Clem Yeobright that describes my thinking on this:

What made McCarthy evil was not his contention that there were communists in the government.  He was actually right about that, though I doubt he knew it or cared.  What made him evil were the things he was willing to do.  Without those, he would be at worst a crank.

    •  Sure, and that distinction is important. But... (3+ / 0-)

It's also important to realize that this idea that McCarthy is a misunderstood American hero, made into a martyr by liberals, is a real thing in certain segments of the current conservative movement.

Cruz hasn't called for blacklists.  He hasn't called for a rebirth of the Unamerican Activities Committee (but Rep. Steve King has). But that doesn't mean he doesn't march under the same banner. And that, I think, is why this was a reasonable question.  How hard would it have been to say, "No, I don't admire Sen. McCarthy.  Whether his concerns were right or wrong, he persecuted innocent Americans in the furtherance of his personal crusade."

Also, as an entirely separate point ... the USSR disintegrated when I was in middle school. I am ... shall we say ... dubious of the motivations of any politician who fears a communist takeover at this point, and that's not even addressing the fact that the First Amendment guarantees the right for Americans to be communists, should they so desire.

      •  Cruz might well sympathize with McCarthy, but (1+ / 0-)

until he actually does something to show that, the question is an intentional insult and gotcha.  Sure, he could answer it.

As I think longer about it, I hope he does answer it next time -- with a well-prepared "How dare you even ask that. Do you know anything at all about Joe McCarthy?" that goes into a litany on McCarthy's evils.

I, on the other hand, would happily say "Fuck you and the horse you rode in on", which goes to show just one of the many reasons why I could never make it in politics.
