  •  Along the street where I work (9+ / 0-)

the trees have been filled with Red-Crossbills of late. 20 or 30 of them working their way up the street and back, three lanes of heavy traffic streaming along the one way street below them. The street trees are - street trees - some ornamental that I've never paid much attention to. Perhaps it's time to do some research. Violet-green Swallows have arrived to nest in the air ducts of the old building on the alley where I often park. Best work bitd of the week was a Wilson's Warbler, singing his heart out up in one of the same trees that the corssbills like.

I came for the politics and stayed for the science.

    •  Crossbills are among my very favorite birds, (9+ / 0-)

and fortunately they are around a lot, visiting the feeder daily and in the nearby alders. It's not just their gorgeous shades of mottled red and gold, but I also like their calm, pragmatic demeanor (for a bird). They don't get agitated by the siskins screeching and flapping at them. They munch away carefully, gazing contemplatively into the middle distance.

Wilson's, haven't seen any of them yet. I'll keep an eye out now.

I like how you watch for birds even when you're working ;-)
