because "all my friends" or "associates" or other limited group hold that view is somewhat natural and a big mistake.

I've heard scientifically literate people sincerely say "most people" don't challenge evolution when the numbers of pretty good polling indicates that is not exactly true here in the U.S. It is only "most people" in the areas they select to live and circles in which they move.

It happens in a wider scope. I've had new travelers, reasonably well read, sincerely assuming that people in some other country in which we've met really hold some treasured "American value" in the same regard they and other countrymen do. I've seen some react with shock when it becomes evident that, no, here people really do not value that rather peculiar view. "Rugged individualism" or the "nuclear family" are examples.

It is very easy to fall into the trap of seeing the world through the lens of our location and individual circle and most of us, at least to some extent, self select to like minded people. So, it would not surprise me at all to find Bauer is absolutely sincere, a true believer, in "skewed polls" here just as many were apparently just as certain Romney had it won hands down.

The only foes that threaten America are the enemies at home, and those are ignorance, superstition, and incompetence. [Elbert Hubbard]
