  •  Thanks OPOL (28+ / 0-)

This time they really are going for a zombie catfood commission.  Rises from the dead every ten years.  Chomp, chomp, chomp.

    •  They're just not that into us (13+ / 0-)

When the Senate Majority Whip (MW) and personal friend of the president (he first urged Obama to run for president) is proposing CFC Lite, it's a problem.  When he starts publicly recycling the "20 year projection" canard, it's an even bigger problem.

When the fairly regressive Greenspan Commission recommendations were adopted in 1983, those modifications were projected to ensure systematic solvency for the next 75 years.  Now, 30 years later, our MW (and his friends in the WH) are telling us that the system may become insolvent in 20 years?  What happened to the extra 25 years of projected solvency?  Has anybody tried to figure out what happened to them?  What does the now alleged inaccuracy of the prior projections say about the accuracy of present projections?  How does projecting SS solvency decades down the road differ from palm reading?

Why is a party that isn't doing a damned thing about the objectively verifiable climate crisis so worried about future SS projections of questionable accuracy?  One doesn't have to be James Hansen to know that we're frying our home planet.  Where is the presidential commission on climate change?  Al Gore has plenty of time on his hands these days, and there has to be one ex-legislator Gooper (Olmpia Snowe ?) who still actually believes in science.

Occam's Razor tells us that the only logical conclusion to draw here is that FIRE calls the shots w/ the Dems.

Some men see things as they are and ask why. I dream of things that never were and ask why not?

SS was used instead on dealing with the climate crisis and fighting back by employing people all over the Country, FDR style, rebuilding and retooling the infrastructure to be one that can survive the inevitable changes from our changing climate.

That kind of stuff doesn't even end up in official discussions about our economic situation and to my knowledge absolutely no lone member of the Democratic Party, in the entire history of Social Security, has ever tried this hard to get changes to SS, changes that always amount to cuts to its beneficiaries.

Cuts in benefits to people in the most successful, most popular, and most needed govt. program in its history and obviously Obama's efforts to get those cuts ain't over yet.

Let's not keep letting the Whack-the-Social-Safety-Net prime mover off the hook: Obama. This is his Catfood VII (for those who haven't lost track). Durbin is Obama's right-hand man and was appointed by Obama to be on his original Catfood Commission.

Obama’s Right-Hand-Man Offers Social Insurance Program Cuts, Again

How many times can the Obama administration offer cuts to the social insurance system, before Americans realize that the focus on government deficits is just a ruse?

The mendacious focus on the deficit is just a tool to drive cuts in our social insurance programs, the only part of the government that is truly paid for through income taxes and FICA. The assault on working people continues:...

Obama and the Democrats are only interested in keeping taxes low for rich people and corporations. If it is hard for you to  believe this is true, think of this koan, “Cuts to earned benefits are a form of taxation.” But only for people with incomes below the FICA cap of about 113K.
