Rove looked at the polls over time and saw steadily rising support for gay rights going back to the early 90's.  He knew that 2004 just happened to occupy a space on the trendline where a strong majority still opposed gay marriage, while there was just enough support to make the issue a legitimate threat to the fundies.  So, he knew that putting all those nasty initiatives on the ballot would animate conservative voters and force Democrats to either support a policy the general public opposed or dither and squirm.

    Democrats regrettably chose the latter.

But Rove's "permanent majority" was a con act he played on his own party.  Rove had a strategy to win one tough national election, at the expense of future national elections that he'd never have to work on, and I'm convinced he knew all about the difficult position he was creating for the next generation's GOP at the time.

Win one or two tough national elections, become known as a king-maker thereby gaining access to the BIG money, then just sit back and gather the money without having to do any more of that pesky election-managing stuff.

With Karl, it's ALWAYS about the money.  The only reason he's now pretending to want the Republican party to appear more rational is because he doesn't want to lose access to all those moneyed political contributors.

      And no, I'm not cynical.
