    Sorry if this has been answered, but I thought the justices themselves determined that there was standing by accepting the case to begin with. Can you all explain why they can essentially not decide a case they decided to hear? I hope I'm not the only non-attorney here who is confused about that!

      They could have dismissed the case without granting cert if they were clear on standing.  Of course, if they weren't clear until later, it was not really a "mistake" -- it was just an "improvident grant" of cert.
