      •  Wow Durbin's not running. He's a lame duck. (0+ / 0-)

That must be why he feels free to do this to social security.

        •  not sure if they confirmed it or not (1+ / 0-)

at that breakfast that he is preparing for a reelection campaign. But I think it is still up in the air, from the way the question sounded.

Q: Senator, it sounds like you’re going to run again next year for re-election?

            SEN. DURBIN: Does it?

Q: Your friends in Chicago say that’s the case. Could you talk about your (early future ?) in the Democratic caucus and what you might be looking to do in the next eight years? And then also, the governor’s race next year in Illinois – if you could just – some of your friends. There’s two Madigans. There’s a Daley. And there is obviously Governor Pat Quinn. Is that going to sort itself out with some, you know, very small amount of blood? Or is there going to be a messy primary – (inaudible) –

SEN. DURBIN: I haven’t made any formal announcements about what’s going to happen in my re-election plans. What I’ve said is I’m making all the plans and preparations to run for re-election. I’ll say something more formal and public a little later on. My ultimate ambition is to be a senator from Illinois. I feel that I’ve been fortunate to be brought into leadership. I’ve worked closely with Harry and Chuck and Patty for the last several years. And I really enjoy being in that room when the discussions take place.

There’s a price to be paid for being in leadership, you can imagine. But it is worth the price, as far as I’m concerned, because at least my view is considered when we come up with a plan or a strategy. So it’s up to the caucus what my future may be, and I’m very happy where I am working with Harry and Chuck and Patty. So I’m not going to go beyond that because that, I think, is too speculative.

Illinois is going through a period here, as I mentioned earlier, with our legislature in Springfield and our governor that’s as hard a political assignment as I’ve ever seen, dealing with this pension problem. And it’s – it is awful, as you can imagine. And all the choices are bad. And there’s a feeling that the governor needs to show leadership and produce results in order to merit renomination and re-election.

There are people looking at running against him. They include Lisa Madigan, the attorney general, and Bill Daley, who’s known to everyone here in the room. I don’t believe – I don’t know that Lisa has made a decision. I think she’s going to make one soon. If she gets in the race, she is likely to be the only challenger. I don’t think Bill Daley will get in the race. But I leave that up to him. I mean, that’s really ultimately his decision.
