are, no matter who or what you are fighting for you can learn a lot from the gay rights movement.

The gay rights movement humbles me to the core of my being. If I start to feel like x, y, or z is too hard or too big to tackle, I just have to think about the GLBT community and their struggles and their fire and I get my shit together.

There's a lot of quit and navel-gazing and bargaining with yourself in non-Movement Conservatism. A lot of voices telling you Friedman Rule shit. Six more months. Someday, just not now. Maybe in ten years. Sometimes the person seen as the smartest guy in the room is that guy telling you to sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up and let mommy and daddy concentrate on mommy and daddy stuff. Like you are a fucking child. Sure, your life will suck, and maybe your kids life will suck a little less, maybe not, but your grandkids, now they will get a better run.

ACT-UP. Gay people would have been dying at the rate they were dying in the beginning without them. I think about ACT-UP a lot when a 'patience off' breaks out in center leftie corners.

The refusal to wait until the most bigoted person in the room is willing to let you have rights before you take is risk is like sticking your face in ice water if you've spent too long in the beltway or watched too much cable news.

as well as HIV/AIDS activism has one unique feature: its very basis is its members voluntarily disclosing something about themselves which is feared and loathed by its opponents and which at least for some could be otherwise concealed--namely, sexual orientation. Coming out is where all the power is, where the fuel for the fight comes from, how we humanize our struggle.

I agree though. If you want to learn how to do activism, one of the first places to look is the LGBT community.

your premise is a bit inaccurate.

I cannot hide who I am and I simply do not try to any longer.

I believe the fight is for Equity Under Law, no more or less.

If x, y and z are granted special favors, then we should as well.  Heterosexual couples are granted the special favor of marriage, tax breaks and spousal rights, then all couples should be afforded the same, by our government.

Its truly a sad day that special laws have to be written to ensure these basic equal protections and that many of my fellow Americans would intentionally deny me the same privileges they enjoy.

A direct result, imo, of the evils of religion.
