  •  Ancestral ghosts. I've been lucky enough to (17+ / 0-)

have been psychologically haunted by many of mine...thanks to a series of coincidences that led to boxes of documents, family bibles, etc, surviving. One side of my family came here penniless in the 1640s.

That man, left his family behind in Dorchester to sail up the St. Charles steal land from the tribe living there. He was armed with weaponry they didn't possess, but was burned to death in his cabin of his descendants was a farmer-artist in the 1860s & volunteered in the Union Army-he left behind diaries & poems filled with the romantic love he felt for his wife & an almost equally romantic love for the Union & hatred of slavery...

The Jewish side of my family arrived here just in time to end up in the civil war as well. Not speaking English didn't stop him from having a leg blown off by a Confederate cannon ball & spending the rest of his life at the equivalent of a VA hospital.

After that we have an expat Canadian mayor, socialists & labor organizers...who all left papers behind that haunt me.

Then there's my son's family in Mexico...who left no papers behind but plenty of llving generations including his great-great-great grandmother (her parents never spoke a word of the "invaders" language-Spanish)....

Whether we see them or not, whether we know their names or not, this American landscape is haunted by many ghosts.
