    To hear Scalia arguing the case for the defending attorney, instead of simply questioning him.
    Oh, that happens all the time in oral argument—in lower appellate courts as well as the Supremes, and by liberal judges as well as conservative ones like Scalia. He just happens to be more of an asshole about it (not to mention more of an asshole in general) than most judges are.

      When asked why he doesn't ask questions at oral arguments, he's said that the lawyers have come prepared to make an argument, and he wants to hear that argument.
