As a gay man in a 23 year relationship, I couldn't agree more.  I have a much younger partner whose future, when I pass, gives me my greatest concerns.  Will he be able to survive comfortably on what we have saved together, or will he be troubled in his old age?  My talks with lawyers over the years have helped me plan somewhat, but having dealt with my parents' deaths and estates, I see how even when one makes the best efforts, there are potential pitfalls in estate planning.  These problems are exponentially worse for unmarried partners.  That, and the fact that there are some significant financial benefits such as Social Security spousal survivor's benefits which accrue to married couples, make the issue of marriage equality vital to us.

We live in North Carolina and have little hope of achieving this equality in the near future.  Our hopes lie with a Supreme Court decision that bring about real equality for all gay people.  Perhaps we will be surprised and the court members  will live up to their title as justices.
