  •  Great diary of a tragic event (5+ / 0-)

There are some terrific things going on in schools, even schools in program improvement. The "numbers" (and comparing them to arbitrary targets) are a way for people who don't know your community, your school, or your staff, to pretend that they're doing something without lifting a finger.

I especially appreciate your personalized stories and your effort to include references, to help us all understand the real consequences of a terrible idea.

PS: Your spell-checker did you wrong in terms of "principle" (an idea) vs. "principal" (a school administrator), if you want to go back and edit.

Fry, don't be a hero! It's not covered by our health plan!

    •  and this diary doesn't just apply to ONE school! (4+ / 0-)

this is what is happening in our entire public education system as there are those who would destroy it.

i would hope that parents flatly refuse to enroll their children in charter schools - for without public support, there IS no "public" education.

like social security and medicare and the postal service, public education has been one of the crowning jewels in this nation.  now, a few greedy people want to claim those "jewels" should belong to their profit-making.

without a strong public education system - all the way through higher ed, our country will become a nation of bigger fools than already exist in large numbers.

there was never going to be a miliary "coup" in this nation - it was always going to be a monetary one as soon as the new deal could be struck down.

      sigh...

I could not find any incidence where I misuesed principle. I tell my physics students that the uncertainty principle is not your pal. It is one of the few words I can spell!
