  •  I have mine, and here's a story (12+ / 0-)

I had to produce a birth certificate to apply for IMSS, Mexico's equivalent of Medicare. Not only that, I had to provided a certified translation of it into Spanish. I didn't need the birth certificate for any of the other Mexican bureaucracies I've gone through, just IMSS.

But here comes the story: while I was in the IMSS office waiting for them to call my number, I took an actual look at my own birth certificate, something I had not done for a very long time.

It's from the Commonwealth of Virginia. For both of my parents, there's this item: "Color or Race". (This was translated into Spanish as "color o raza"; remember the stink that Limbaugh made over the word "raza" in connection with Justice Sotomayor?)

So, I've shown this birth certificate to a few people, and said, "this gives you an idea of how old I am", and told the story of how mixed-race marriages weren't legal in Virginia until 1965, and only then because the Commonwealth defended the law all the way to the Supreme Court, and lost.
