The weird thing is, the story was told to me as happening to a friend of a friend back in the 1970s, then told to me as happening to a friend of a DIFFERENT friend about twelve years later.  Harlan himself has said on numerous occasions that it didn't happen, any more than the "Ellison threw someone down an elevator shaft" or the "Ellison dropped a chandelier on a ballroom full of people" things happened, but it's still told as an absolutely positively 100% TRUE TRUE TRUE story.

    Must drive him nuts.
