  •  People are stupid because they CAN be stupid. (3+ / 0-)

Knowledge is only useful if it helps predict events in the world around us, and especially useful if it helps us control them.  That is what a scientific experiment is: a prediction followed by a measurement to see if the prediction held up.  People who live routine lives and simply do as they are told need very limited predictive capabilities.  They can be very stupid about pollution or genetics or whatever because they will never make a decision based on that knowledge.

So, they hear a minister tell them that evolution is bunk, that is all they need to know.  They can safely ignore it because any decision they make based on that knowledge (i.e. who they vote for and if they slash CDC funding), the cause & effect is way too far removed.

Plus, I think people who failed high-school physics take a certain satisfaction in seeing it cut from the curriculum....

for disengaging. We've been too comfortable for too long, and propagandized into believing America #1 etc. Can't blame people who are working their lives away (if they're lucky enough to have a job) for being too exhausted to engage or to realize what we clever ones have seen forever.

It's not their fault. It's the fault of the powerful who are invested in feeling superior, and who enact policies to ensure they can retain that position. And who steal the money rightfully earned by those poor folks working two or three jobs just to get by.

Just let the poor working slob know. He'll get it. He's always gotten it, on some level.

      •  Its not so much disengaged as tech-knowledge is (3+ / 0-)

viewed as unnecessary.  Alot of people view technology as card-tricks (even people who work technology).  If you can follow instructions you can do alot of the work.  It ends up as compartmentalized knowledge that people don't know how to integrate into their daily lives.  So doctors and lawyers who you would otherwise think are highly educated think global warming is bunk and get their opinions from rush limbaugh.  Their critical thinking skills start and end with whatever cases they are working on.
