  •  This is the reason the fight for DADT was so (4+ / 0-)

drawn out. Once that passed, then it opened up the door for all sorts of new legal and social precedents to happen.

DADT was the first big step in the DoD/Federal Government in legally recognizing gay members as citizens.

You cannot recognize Gay people as equal in the military, if you do not allow for them to have adult relationships, and that cannot be equal if their partners, spouses, etc., are unable to utilize the same resources as straight couples in the military.

And if you recognize Gays as serving openly in the military, then the accusation of Gay, can no longer be used as a euphemism for "Unpatriotic" because in the past, it was often implied as such

Forgive my "French" but --Commie-Pinko-F***ot ring a bell?

And if you have official paperwork from the DoD [read Federal Government], then states have difficulty turning applicants away, or risk appearing anti-military and by their own jingoistic definitions--unpatriotic.

This the same fight over and over again, for many minority groups in this country. Once a minority group wins status in the military, all the rest will follow. It is one of the few times when our worship of the military, can actually work in favor of making our society more diverse and slowly spreading equality around in a more even fashion.

That's why its so important to keep a close eye on our military brass and our chaplaincy. There are hidden power structures in there that are extensions of the groups mentioned. Their powers within the ranks may not be absolute, but they can cause some real problems, when the military needs to fix cultural problems that exist within the ranks.

many of the larger military bases are in very red states.

They're going to have to accept the same sex couples that get assigned to those bases, or the military will be the one bringing the suit.

That's what will drive the states to accept it. Even if a couple can't get married THERE, they'll have to at the very least accept that the couple IS married.
