  •  I'm talking about actions in the real world. (0+ / 0-)

It's fairly easy to change a picture on a social media webiste.  It's somewhat harder to get up at 4:30am to stage for an overpass event or to volunteer for a GOTV effort when things come to the ballot (Which is how things like marriage equality got legalized, which caused the Prop 8 reaction, which is how this got to the courts, which is why people are changing their profile prictures. Just sayin...)

Similarly, it's way easier to put a picture of a stuffed animal (which was the child abuse meme) and to say "I don't like child abuse" than it is to speak up in public when someone smacks their kid.  Or to lobby for better food standards and fight the proliferation of HFCS in school food than it is type in social media websites.

But - more to the point - I saw alot of comments on this diary that implied that anyone who doesn't agree that changing their facebook picture has to be some sort of conservative that is QQing about the state of gay rights.  But that's not entirely true.  I have ~350 friend on facebook.  The vast majority of whom are active in politics and on the left. The only people I'm seeing change their pictures are the ones who have never shown up for anything besides the parties.

It's a slow day in my office so I felt like providing the view of someone who agrees with marriage equality but has no intentions of participating in the meme.  Although if I thought it might change a mind I would.  But seriously... noone on my friends list will switch sides because I change a picture.  I'm geussing neither will anyone on your friends list. And they all probably know you support marriage equality too.
