  •  The pair at the Wetland flushed (6+ / 0-)

when my shadow hit the pond. Took them only a couple of seconds to race across the pond and disappear in the brush. They have such funny rattly voices. I'm not sure if the Wetland offers them the proper nesting habitat. It's very new and has few snags, but one can hope. Might be that some nest boxes can be put up next year, just in case.

    •  When we were in NC... (6+ / 0-)

We had a wood duck house at the edge of our pond.  I was really happy when a pair of ducks settled into the house and laid eggs.  Then one day, I went down to the pond and saw the head of a black snake sticking out of the hole in the house.   We had a baffle on the pole that the house was mounted upon, but the snake had dropped down from a tree branch above. It had swallowed every single egg and was now too fat to get back out of the hole. I opened the house by the side wall and pulled the 3 ft. long snake out by its tail.  I was so annoyed...
