That is what the military does - they risk the lives of soldiers and sailors and airmen to win battles and wars, and they almost always lose some. I knew a guy once who was a Lt. Colonel in the reserves, in charge of a medical brigade. Every time they supported an exercise for the airborne troops practicing their jumps there were deaths, just in the practice exercise. Parachutes are unforgiving things if you don't pack them well.

That leads me to two conclusions. First, that we need to elect people who won't fight stupid and / or immoral wars. Second, that soldiers and sailors and airmen deserve respect.

Economics is a social *science*. Can we base future economic decisions on math?

    •  French Experience at Dien Bien Phu (3+ / 0-)

During the early stages of the French attack into Dien Bien Phu they used only qualified airborne troops.  After several months of grinding battle, they had burned most of their "paras."  They reviewed the data and learned that the governing factor on injuries in paratroop drops was the number of drops made, not the supposed skill and experience of the troops.  By the end, they accepted volunteers from regular leg infantry to drop into the valley with acceptable results, as the research had predicted.
