The GOP courted the white racist bloc who felt betrayed by the Democrats for the awful crimes of making sure that black people could vote, work, get an education, and live in nice neighborhoods.

They managed to keep their non-racist voters, receptive to the focus-on-yourself-and-society-will-work-itself-out attitude of conservatism.

This worked out until George Bush's second term, when reality slapped us in the face and revealed conservatism is simply out of touch with reality.  There was nothing left but empty talking points.  The non-racist voters began to trickle away.

Then, along comes Obama, who co-opted some of the right's more popular proposals like Obamacare and more troops in Afghanistan, I believe on purpose, in order to box the right into a corner.  They ended up being so anti-Obama, they sound like lunatics every time they're honest.  This had the effect of making Republicans not resemble ordinary Americans.  And that is leading to an exodus of non-racist voters... and probably some racists, too.

So it turns right, as we expect.  Any organization that has a fight where the extremists win will get even more extreme as non-extremists leave the "true believers" behind, until it all falls apart.  As we see with the GOP.  The "true believers" will fight amongst themselves over who is the truest believer, because they haven't figured out that all of their beliefs are out of touch with reality... as we see with the GOP.   Soon enough it will all fall apart for them.

    They're reaping what they've sown.

Conservatives need to realize that their Silent Moral Majority is neither silent, nor moral, nor a majority.
