I think Republicans very much want the Supreme Court to strike down Doma and allow gay marriage; and the Democrats the reverse. Heck, the AG isn't even arguing that gay marriage should be the law of the land in all 50, only in CA.

If the Republicans don't get rescued by the Supreme Court, it'll be 20 years before they recover. 70% of younger voters favor gay marriage. They'd lose a generation (even more than they already have.)

I go back and forth on my personal sentiments. I think there's something to winning this issue via politics and not via the courts. I agree with Ginsburg that Roe v. Wade in some respects has allowed abortion to become a rallying cry, when if it was initially changed via the legislative process this may have been a long decided political issue with easy access in all 50.

I wouldn't be surprised if the opinions on the gay marriage cases come out all screwy, with conservative justices leaning towards a broad ruling and liberal judges leaning toward a narrow. The Supreme Court is a political body just like the legislature, and this is the most important decision politically since Bush v. Gore.
