        Your response suggests that you perceive our diarist's motivation to have been purely self-preservation. Is it your position that people who serve in uniform must always support the wars that are chosen for them? Or that they should suppress all sympathy for those who are directly affected?

        Millions of Americans were greatly relieved when Saigon fell. Apprehensive, to be sure, but relieved that the US was finally getting the hell out of there. Not a few of them were those in uniform, front-line or not. Weariness and disgust with a corrupted system one is caught in isn't the reserve of those up front pulling the trigger. Like all things, there are many shades.
