  •  i liked her idea for national archive (7+ / 0-)

to document and give voice to the mothers, fathers and other family members and this will also help the community to understand the ongoing impact and suffering by these mothers and fathers of forced adoption/removal.

    •  This reminded me immediately (5+ / 0-)

of holocaust museums around the world. There has been at the time immediately after various horrors a push to forget (not copied in South Africa) and get on with it. Sometimes it takes the coming-of-age of the next generation, who need answers for their questions "why?"

But for adoption, there is another aspect. Punishing women for having sex outside of marriage is still going on - what else is the current extremist push against not only abortion, but birth control as well? But there is also the pretense of such adoptions: let's pretend it never happened, that your family is the same as if you gave birth to this child. This is based on the assumption that adoption is not second-best, and the shame is not only with the unwed mother, but also with the adopting couple.

Second choice is not necessarily second best. We need also to recognize that shame has no place forming families - no children are mistakes, no couple should be punished for not being able to procreate while also shaming the women who are seen to procreate when they shouldn't.

Hopefully this will happen eventually as the whole process becomes more open.

I was also reminded during the video of the PM's speech of 12-step programs. Maybe there is a need for nations as well as individuals to take stock, find the people they harmed, and make amends whenever possible. Some countries, including the US, are still in heavy denial about this.
