Whether by Twain or Disraeli, this famous quote applies.

Rand Paul says "statistics have shown that gun control simply does not work"

Show me the facts, Rand. Not the Republican or NRA spin, but the FACTS!

...to work, thanks to the NRA and gutless, bought and paid for pols. Background checks have always been a porous Maginot line because "private" sales are exempted. So, if I want to sell or give my Bushmaster to my mentally ill nephew or neighbor, I am free to do so.

UK and OZ have effective gun control, no reason we can't, 2A notwithstanding.

The fact is that almost every public mass shooting is facilitated by weapons or magazines that were previously illegal. The NRA apologists will say they could possibly have been carried out anyway. Anything is possible. Adam Lanza possibly could have sneaked into Sandy Hook and he could have possibly murdered 26 by stabbing each with with a sharpened pencil. But, what really happened is he shot his way in with a Bushmaster and used 30 round magazines, leaving the 10 rounders at home. Of course, possibly he could have fabricated 30 round mags in his basement, or bought them on the street. Possibly. But my guess is that under tighter laws, he would have been less well equipped and the carnage would have been lessened. of course, there was no need for him to go to extreme or illegal lengths to het 30 round magazines because the were readily and legally available. He knew guns, and he chose the most lethal configuration.

Paul and the others in the filibuster five better pray to whatever demon they worship that there is not another mass shooting while they grandstand. Sadly, their actions make such a recurrence far more likely.

But the problem with statistics is you can twist them whichever way you want.

handgun control inc annihilated its credibility and that of anyone pushing gun control by distorting statistics and flat out lying. Every statistic you'll see on this site is utter bullshit.. it's been politicised too much. Noone does the research without having an axe to bear and that itself makes the study distorted from the start.

Second amendment advocates (like me) can put forth statistics that Directly disprove the statistics put forth even by the HONEST gun control advocates (meaning visa versa too of course) because it's not that simple.

LA/NYC/Philly/Chicago etc.. tightest gun control on the planet.. basically only rich white people can own guns. Worst crime rates. On the other hand nations like  Switzerland and Israel have extraordinarily high gun ownership (look that up..) and extraordinarily low crime rates.

The truth is crime isnt caused by gun ownership... gangs  and violent crime have existed since this country started.. it's not about guns it's about our society. gun controllers AND their opposition are both trying to control the consequences of our BAD economic/social choices by limiting the power of the lower classes in reality.

I didn't cite no stinkin' statistics.

Mass public shootings are terrorism. We have a problem. We lack sufficient controls to keep criminals and the severely mentally ill from purchasing firearms. Plus, we allow the commercial sale of weapons and magazines whose primary purpose is to put a lot of lethal firepower out very quickly. There is no legitimate reason for this, and, frankly, the second amendment clearly permits the regulation of these weapons/magazines, and clearly permits background checks, as I am sure you know from Heller.

You can have your 2A rights for home defense, for hunting and target shooting. But I want to be safe, and I want my family to be safe, when we go to the mall, to the movies, to church or to school. I don't want to have have to wear body armor or have to carry, or to be under armed security to achieve that safety. Your 2A rights end when they unreasonably impair my constitutionally protected liberties.

are the actual numbers of 'bad guys' who were stopped and arrested for trying to buy guns as blocked persons from an FFL.  In 2009 there were 71,000 reports of 'not passed' NICS checks that had to be processed, many were 'OKed' after three days, and  several were denied due to 'other reasons' meaning that the buyer successfully appealed.

Less than 100 criminals a year.

        Is this worth it?

I'm starting to think the answer is nope.
