  •  I think they're more afraid of themselves (14+ / 0-)

and their sexual urgings and longings, be they male or female. The vehemence and violence makes me think this is about the ghosties lurking in their own subconscious, the things that go bump in the night and cannot be escaped by running away.

    •  Their fear is of their own urges primarily (8+ / 0-)

rather than of the direction of those urges. I actually doubt that the majority of the haters is secretly gay and hate themselves for it. What they are afraid of is their own sexuality tout court.

      •  And this, I think, is curable with education (4+ / 0-)

as we move human culture forward, trying to bring more and more sunlight to the dark corners of the human psyche, trying to teach people an Operating Manual For The Human Mind.

It's only been since the mid 80s that people could speak freely about having been physically, psychologically, and sexually abused by family members.

Commercials on TV for anti-depressants are still too euphemistic, but by God we have commercials on TV for anti-depressants. As much as I hate Big Pharma's ad campaigns, let's add to that meds for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, just as we've done for male impotence -- let it all hang out, get it all out in the public arena, say it loud and proud and tear through some of the veils of mystery and shame.

This is a multi-generation battle, but it's one the species can win I feel certain. Someday, people will look back at the 21st century and speak in gobsmacked tones about how cruel, primitive, ignorant, and toxic were our attitudes toward human psychology and sexuality.

They're afraid that gay men think about them the way they (the bigots) think about women.

Writing in all lower-case letters should be a capital offense

    •  Somewhere Nietzsche says (5+ / 0-)

something about how the most outspoken moralists are those that suffer from the most horrifying passions.  I've noticed this with a lot of fundamentalist types.  So many of them seem to come from backgrounds of alcoholism, drug abuse, sex addiction, etc.

perhaps need a lot more help putting ourselves back together -- or building a functioning self in the first place. Not everyone succeeds.
