  •  You have nothing to apologize for..... (5+ / 0-)

....what an incredible, warm-hearted diary this is. Ironically, while you are feeling more cynical about our country after reading your diary I feel much less cynical about it because there are people like you in it. And you are not alone or we gay folks would never have made the progress that we have made.

It is understanding Americans like you that have helped us get to a point I never thought we would reach -- a point where the Supreme Court is mulling whether we have the right to marry.

Nothing worth doing is easy, so I understand how dispiriting the exchange might have been for you, but I think you explained in clearer terms than I have ever heard it expressed why Americans should support the cause of marriage equality. While it fell on deaf ears there, it is well received here and I think you speak for most Americans. It is because of people like you -- straight, opened minded, reasonable people who aren't cowed into silence-- that we have come this far.

    Thanks very much!

If you hate government, don't run for office in that government.

    •  I remember when marriage equality (4+ / 0-)

was under debate in New York State, and NBA player Steve Nash (then with Phoenix, now with LA Lakers) supported it. One of his fans Tweeted that he was disappointed to hear Nash was in favor, and asked, "Steve, something we should know?" as if only a gay person would support such a thing.

Nash's reply was priceless: "Yes. Tolerance."

With folks like Nash, former hockey player Sean Avery, football players Brendon Ayanbadejo and Chris Kluwe, and others, there are plenty of straight allies with the platform to support marriage equality.

There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- goddammit, you've got to be kind. -- Kurt Vonnegut
