      which admittedly is fiction, is that most of the everyday non-noble folk of the time would have had a very unclear personal religious belief -- as a matter of survival.

      Don't believe anything too strongly except for a few Christian universal fundamentals, have a general knowledge of several sorts of Christianity, and know which are the correct answers to religious questions asked in what wording or with what regional accent.

      When the time travelers in the book (displaced WV mining town) begin to accumulate control of an ever-larger area, the fact they insist on freedom of belief makes a lot of very scared people very happy - especially when things like 'why are you asking us what you need to believe now?' is one of the first things some of them hear from the newcomers.
