  •  dunno about the scope but the gun runs for (7+ / 0-)

$1200-$1500 on auction, sometimes going quite a bit higher.

Since he is a gun safety expert, I would expect him to have some sort of "hardened" gun storage or magazine in his car.  It is not too hard to construct and with a $300 welder, you can construct one yourself.  If you prefer, I believe a local welder could fabricate one for $750 or so.  While trigger locks are necessary and locking gun cases a good idea, we learned back in the old days of 8 track tapes that a locked transport device just means the thief takes all of your tapes instead of a selection.  A gun case remains mobile.

If you want to get fancy, then you could always go for a double walled car safe for your weapon.  The only thing to remember is to make it large enough for your to stow your weapon in a case and the case in the magazine

... weapon around would have something in his car to secure it.  But the more salient point is this:

he was cleaning out his garage and placed the firearm in the back of his Dodge Magnum station wagon
Obviously the gun was hanging out in its case in the garage before he decided to do his spring cleaning.

room with a magazine inside the room with the guns secured inside the magazine (and the room is inside the house; you can't do that with an explosives mag that has to be a certain distance from all buildings)
