For the shock and dismay, I think it takes a leap for people to understand where you're coming from here. Even good Democrats/Liberals/Progressives might not be entirely prepared. Not that they are full on Randians; perhaps they merely bare the inescapable influence of pay-as-you-go culture and don't see the intrinsic and practical benefits to a society that goes to great efforts to not overburden those with the fewest financial resources. I look at it this from the individual level, kind of bottom up: there should be a constantly rising floor of resources freely available to any member of society. Whether they presently pay taxes or not. I am my brother's keeper, etc., etc.

Not sure I can agree on the idea in comments about gas taxes: environmental benefits vs. regressive measure. Tough call. Maybe individual rations instead and no more bank CEO helicopter rides to work.

    I'd suggest one more listing:

    10.  Public housing

Everyone should have access to free decent, safe, clean, heated/cooled accommodations. Rent or a mortgage is the single largest financial burden on most people. Landlords and lenders are leeches draining any nation of its lifeblood. Obviously, not too big on the frills. But no one should be out on the streets in a humane and decent society.

Upshot:  A construction boom and more money available for spending and savings.

You show a little grit and you lands in jail.

Ultimately all land must be public for national sovereignty to be a reality, and if land is public, then people have a right to some minimum share of the livelihood from it - be it food or housing development.

Business doesn't distinguish between making money and taking money.
