"There's a bit of creative paralleling that often sounds good but doesn't hold up to the archaeological record without some generous extrapolation."

There is not one credible shred of evidence that the character named "Jesus Christ" ever walked this earth any more than the character of "Mithra" or "Osiris".

Yet people keep insisting that there had to at least be "some guy" or "an itinerant rabbi" that HAD to spark the Jesus stories.  Well, no, there doesn't have to be one. Those statements are wishful thinking at best.  People don't want to let go of the fact that they have based their whole lives and universal view on nothing more than a mythologiy concocted by power hungry people.

As for Nugent, the ending paragraph shows that while he has this mythological knowledge, he still is creating his own by presenting "Jesus" as a total good guy. He can only do that by whitewashing the gospels stories. Any character that endorses the concept of hell, eternal torture has a morality problem that overrides any statements of love and compassion.  The Jesus character was anything but ecumenical and benign.
