    But despite her death, I don't think she lost the battle at all.

    The end result of terminal cancer is death. So, frankly, is the end result of life. She lived for over three years, with cancer that was Stage IV at diagnosis. She lived longer than her doctors expected, and was a good bit down the "long tail" of survival for her condition. Most of her life was a hard and despairing one, but she found her greatest moments of happiness in the midst of one of the most terrible of illnesses. And at the end, she passed away peacefully and quickly, in her sleep.

    I'm not sure what to call all of that. But I cannot call it losing.
