AOEU is the layout of the vowels on a steno machine.  I was hopeful I was no longer the only stenographer here.

      •  I Used to be - my machine is in storage (0+ / 0-)

I still remember a lot of my machine shorthand though, if I'm writing fast I still do things like write "pogs" for "position."  Was going to go into court reporting, but found it incredibly boring for some reason.  Ending up in bookkeeping instead.  I'm fascinated by the new machines that type right into a laptop.  Mine had the paper strip and we had to manually transcribe it.

If you have a mind to pick it back up and get up to speed, there's still a huge demand for it, not just in the legal setting but also broadcast captioning and Computer Access Real Time or CART for deaf and HOH college students, stadium captioning, etc.

I graduated from court reporting school in 1998 and had one semester of CAT training, but it is the absolute standard now for us to use computer-aided transcription software.  It saves so much time!  And the machines?  Well, there was one in development that was going to be like the iPhone only with a steno keyboard, until the folks developing the technology sold the patent to Apple and it went into the iPhone.  That left us with this or this

In school I had to type from the paper notes.  Today's court reporting students have no idea how easy they've got it, as most programs want students on CAT software as soon as they're finished learning theory.
