  •  My kids grew up in Monticello, part of exurbia in (0+ / 0-)

the 6th District. The population of the school district was about 4-5 times the population of Monticello itself, due to all the housing developments that filled the countryside. I worked locally, but we were in Minneapolis constantly for shopping, sporting events, and shows. My kids were driving in Minneapolis traffic on their learner's permits. At the same time, some of their classmates were rarely in the Metro area, because their parents were afraid to drive on the Metro freeways or in the city traffic any more than they absolutely had to to get to their jobs. Walking from a restaurant to a show on Hennepin Avenue in the center of Minneapolis was a frightening thing for many of them because "The Cities" were just so scary.
